Tales from the Metropolis - Part 2 (How they Began)

(The below post and this series is entirely a work of fiction. Although some might believe its an exaggerated version of some real life incidents which seek to glorify the protagonist. However the author would like the maintain the pretense of humility which he claims he has stood for all his life.)

Achilles was just 18 when the first great war had begun. His penchant to strike the right deals and know the right people made him very valuable and resulted in him being appointed chief adviser to Commander Raphael who led the forces of evil against the Jedi council. Meticulous planning and flawless execution of several ambushes and financial scams was his forte and he did that with aplomb during the great war breaking the backbone of the enemy. With the war almost won, Raphael wanted to move in for the kill and eliminate all the remaining Jedi warriors it was Achilles who made him see some sense and got him to enlist the services of the survivors. "If they could survive our relentless onslaught for the past 6 months and still regroup and plot against us then they are gifted, incredibly so.." was his retort when other generals opposed his idea. The Jedi, tired of running and living underground gratefully accepted his offer and being the noble race they were, never forgot the favor Achilles had done to them by sparing their lives. They were the founding blocks of his army, the army which the world would later annihilate all traces of evil from the Satellite city and usher in an era of dominance by the 'Family'.

(The Great War was fought in AD 2125 for the control of the Satellite City, a suburb of the Metropolis. The city was ruled by the noble clan of Jedi warriors who stood for righteousness and truth. Their dominance was challenged by the evil forces of General Raphael. Although the Jedi were much more powerful and had technology and money at their disposal, it is widely believed that their downfall was plotted by an unknown strategist. It is rumored that a young boy acting as the adviser of the general was responsible for the tactical warfare which led to the collapse of their industries and banks, which in turn led to a local uprising signaling the beginning of the decline of the Jedi empire.)

In AD 2110, Odysseus entered the limits of Silicon City to work as a waiter in the 'Water Down Cafe'. 10 hours of hard work later he joined the street hustlers to gamble. He was one of the gifted few who could take big risks without battling an eyelid and could keep his nerves during the all important finish. The waiters salary was just a facade to maintain legitimate income, Odysseus was one of the wealthiest hustlers in the Silicon City. He would bet on just about everything, right from race results to the weather to shares to the good old game of blackjack. But behind the calm face was a raging storm, he was in the city on a purpose and he had to achieve it somehow. Count Dooku had led to his downfall from one of the most promising student activists in the country to a disgraced criminal who would be hounded by the red brigade for the rest of his life. It was Count Dooku who ruled the Silicon City when the great student riots happened. In a span of 24 hours Dooku's empire was reduced to ashes. It is said that the rebel student groups who fought against the might of Dooku and eventually killed him were not even from Silicon City. They were mercenaries hired by many charitable trusts in the city. These trusts were secretly financed by a group of hustlers who claimed they were fed up of Dooku's oppressive tax regime. Some claim that the group was just a front to shield one powerful and immensely wealthy hustler who harbored a personal grudge against Dooku. Till date no one in Silicon City knows his name.

(The riots of AD 2123 in the Silicon City began as minor student protests against the forces of Dooku accidentally hitting one of their brethren. However in a span of 24 hrs they grew into a massive fight against the state machinery. Thousands of students mysteriously joined the protests overnight and attacked all state offices and virtually burned down the city. Elders say that it was one powerful individual who orchestrated this slaughter to gain revenge against Dooku who had cut one of his fingers when he had led a similar students uprising against Dooku's mentor down south)

Tales from the Metropolis - Part 1

(The below post and this series is entirely a work of fiction. Although some might believe its an exaggerated version of some real life incidents which seek to glorify the protagonist. However the author would like the maintain the pretense of humility which he claims he has stood for all his life.)

Agamemnon was pacing up and down in his study. He has changed his mind three times in the past one hour. His plan was finally shaping up but a few niggling doubts remained. He had hoped to clear them in this meeting. He was really tired, after 3 years of hard work it was finally time to hand over the reigns of his kingdom to a new leader. The council needed a new face. Someone who could inspire both awe and fear. Someone who was both gentle and tough. In short he needed someone who was all he was and much more. After careful negotiations and deliberations with the other lords and the administrators who ruled the city he had arrived at his choice. Odysseus it would be.

The Beginning:
Achilles was always an ambitious boy. Right from a very young age when he led his small band of followers to conquer the east banks of the river, he was touted as a great war lord. Someone who would bring the glory to both his family but the entire city. The idea to rule over the Metropolis came to him when he was just 17. That was when he got together with a bunch of friends and followers and formed his family. Due to his razor sharp financial brain and an eye for good deals he soon led one of the most prosperous families on the outskirts of the city. But his prosperity brought along many enemies apart from the usual admirers.

Odysseus was the quintessential street fighter. His fighting skills were honed by many street brawls and public fights during his days of student activism. He was one of the brightest and toughest guys to head an activist outfit. His charming ways and penchant to spot an opportunity early on helped him expand his network of sympathizers and friends who helped him form his first major outfit which took over the business on the streets of the Silicon city in the early 21st century. But the Silicon city was just a stepping stone for him to his ultimate ambition, Metropolis, the land of dreams.

The City:
The city was divided into 4 main regions Southern, Central, Eastern and Western which were ruled over by their respective councils supervised by a corrupt board of administrators who held every conceivable power on paper but rarely were allowed to exercise them. The council had the region in its iron grip. The council was headed by a leader for a period of 2-5 years (sometimes longer). Most leaders after finishing their stints at the top of the council became legitimate businessmen or political leaders. Few harbored bigger ambitions and tried to head the state or national councils.

The Western council was economically and strategically the most important of the councils of Metropolis. Many of its past leaders had gone on to head the city and state councils and a couple of them had even headed the national executive.

Agamemnon succeeded Leonidas in 2002 after the latter in his glorious 5 year rule had changed the face of the region. Almost single handedly he has shifted the balance of power in the city and snatched it from the hands of the Southern council. After a 3 year reign Agamemnon finally decided to enter legitimate business and channel all his funds and contacts to build a nationwide network of commodity traders.

He had won many wars and battles in his reign with the help of his lieutenants Achilles and Odysseus. Odysseus handled the people who went into the battle and the contacts while Achilles had his vast network of financial resources at his disposal. Together they made a formidable pair, in fact they were the most lethal combination to have emerged on the city crime scene for almost a century. Both were proud and brave, steadfast in their friendship and terrifying in their vengeance.

Today all Agamemnon hoped for was his decision should not in any way weaken this bond which was the foundation on which his empire stood.

The Family

The Rich One (also known as 'The Chosen One') and the Wise One hated each other at first sight. But slowly began a friendship which laid the foundations of 'The Family'. Over endless sessions of drinking, smoking up, watching movies and organizing events the family grew into a close knit bunch of individuals.

As it is with any other organization the family soon developed its unofficial hierarchy. Both the founders adopted kids who would inherit their legacy. The Wise one chose a couple to inherit his events and political connections while the Rich One selected his successors to inherit his legacy of technological excellence. The family was supposedly ruled by the council consisting of the Rich and the Wise ones ably supported by experienced people both inside and outside the family. Soon the family extended its reach to encompass all social and political barriers. Members or people recruited by them influenced every sphere of life and strived hard to make a difference. Right from professors to peons to Hitmen to politicians, they all patronized the family.

As time passed the family structure changed to fit into the new social fabric. Women were also made a part of the family. Primary qualifications required were knowledge of geography (country capitals most importantly) and respect for age old family traditions. The family of course protected its female clan and saw to it that each and every person irritating them was followed by threatening calls, abuses and physical harassment (in each and every form).

As human nature changed so did the women in the family, many came, many left but one decided to stay back. The Chosen One had finally chosen someone. However like Karan Johar once said, every happy event is followed by a tragic one, the Chosen one had to leave the shores of the country to pursue greater goals. The Family was going international. Reluctantly the Wise One accepted the great burden of leading the family and keeping it together.

As time passed the younglings migrated in search of love and riches, many members passed the seas, the rivers and the creeks to find their place under the sun. Through a combination of Birthday celebrations, Drinking Sessions and Movie screenings the Wise One kept the family together and ensured that the ties of loyalty which bound them to each other were never broken.

He believed that the family which drank together always stayed together. In his zeal to keep traditions alive a family slogan was coined, so that every family member was proud of it and associated himself / herself with the great family legacy. “Jis Toofan Mein Dushman ke hosh ud jaate hain, us toofan mein hum chaadi sukhate hain” (courtesy: Great Bong) is the war cry the family members roar before they plunge themselves into battle.

Seven years after the founders sat around the council table with holy spirits and smoke, another member of the family prepares to take the long journey across the seven seas to meet the chosen one. The first woman to join the family will now play a greater role in shaping the future of the family in the international landscape. With the family core migrating and the younglings still hunting for their place under the sun its finally time for the family to reinvent itself and unveil its new and more powerful avatar.

Looking back at the splendour and glory which the family enjoyed, the Wise one wishes each and every member of the family every success. Of course the family still lives on. Its only a matter of time before we unveil version 2.0 in typical corleonisque fashion. Till then the wise one signs off with a small verse which the family younglings grew up listening to.

Another turning point
A fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist
Directs you where to go
So make the best of this test
And don’t ask why
It’s not a question
But a lesson learned in time
For what it’s worth
It was worth all the while
It’s something unpredictable
But in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life

Back for Sure

Have decided to resume posting regularly. No longer depressed (so no sad songs). No longer bored (so no irritating 2 liners trying to sound cheeky). This time its for sure. Am planning to so a couple of series of posts on some of my favorite themes (mythology, LOTR, Improving Indian sports etc. Will try to keep the boring quotient to the minimum.

Life's been moving along well. Excitement about work varies between the 'I love what i am doing' and the 'WTF' days. But overall its fun. Have started learning how to dance. After the first 15 mins of sheer agony (where they make you stretch;which makes every muscle in my body is in excruciating pain) its quite fun.

Social calender is looking sufficiently engaged with marriages, engagements and outings. So will try uploading pictures also (not mine of course...the beautiful surroundings).

Plan to watch a movie a week for 52 weeks in 2007 is slightly off track. Mainly due to lack of good movies and the rains in Mumbai. But am just 3 movies behind the schedule and am hoping to make up for it in the coming few weeks (assuming the quality of movies released is at least average). Till now havent really seen any really good movie which stands apart from the rest of the mediocre offerings. But in hindi "Life in a Metro' was well worth the 150 bucks spent on it and in english there were quite a few ones i enjoyed but 'Blood Diamond' stood heads and shoulders above the rest.

Plan to finish the following in the next one month:
1. Join Salsa Classes
2. Form Quiz Club in Office
3. Take a weekend off for Trekking
4. Start doing yoga again (flab around the tummy needs to be tucked in)
5. Finish reading Sacred Games.

Thats all for now. Comments welcome. Better quality and frequency of posts promised. Tata.

You and me
We used to be together
Everyday together always
I really feel
That I'm losing my best friend
I can't believe
This could be the end
It looks as though you're letting go
And if it's real
Well I don't want to know

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me cause it hurts
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me cause it hurts

Our memories
Well, they can be inviting
But some are altogether
Mighty frightening
As we die, both you and I
With my head in my hands
I sit and cry

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me cause it hurts (no, no, no)
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me cause it hurts

It's all ending
I gotta stop pretending who we are...
You and me I can see us dying...are we?

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me cause it hurts (no, no, no)
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me cause it hurts
Don't tell me cause it hurts!
I know what you're saying
So please stop explaining

Don't speak,
don't speak,
don't speak,
oh I know what you're thinking
And I don't need your reasons
I know you're good,
I know you're good,
I know you're real good
Oh, la la la la la la La la la la la la
Don't, Don't, uh-huh Hush, hush darlin'
Hush, hush darlin' Hush, hush
don't tell me tell me cause it hurts
Hush, hush darlin' Hush, hush darlin'
Hush, hush don't tell me tell me cause it hurts

Lay a whisper on my pillow,
leave the winter on the ground.
I wake up lonely,
there's air of silence in the bedroom
and all around
Touch me now, I close my eyes and dream away.

It must have been love but it's over now.
It must have been love but I lost it somehow.
It must have been love but it's over now.

From the moment we touched, 'til the time had run out.
Make-believing we're together that I'm sheltered by your heart.
But in and outside I've turned to water like a teardrop in your palm.
And it's a hard winters day, I dream away.

It must have been love but it's over now.
It's all that I wanted, now I'm living without.
It must have been love but it's over now,
it's where the water flows, it's where the wind blows.

I wonder...

If the movie is based on a dictator in Uganda, why is it called 'The Last King of Scotland'

Just saw Children of Men and The Prestige. Very nice. Have no time to write a proper review nor do i think i am qualified enough but please watch. New DVD player finally being put to some good use.

Currently Reading Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman ... too good...insanely funny... must read...

Planning to watch Eklavya over the weekend. Will write a review if i like it.
Its been a while since i last blogged. Finding the motivation to sit and actually write that meaningful post which makes some sense was tough. So i finally figured that instead of waiting why not bombard the 2 or 3 people who read this blog with some more idiotic posts and then rest again for a while. After all the blog needs to have a decent amount of posts. Jokes apart, i have been thinking of writing some serious stuff for a while. Not about my life...not about anyone else's life, but generally.. stuff which makes sense. I guess its much better than posting some silly surveys like then ones you will find below this post.

Have been doing some research on articles related to sports and politics. These are the only things i truly understand and they sound like fun also. So if anyone who reads this has got any bright ideas, please comment or write in. I seriously intend to write meaningful stuff from now on.

Eagerly Awaited in 2007

Books:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - J K Rowling (methinks harry wont die)
Inheritance Trilogy- Book 3 - Christopher Paolini (methinks Arya is the 3rd Rider)
Gameworld Trilogy-The Unwaba Revelations - Samit Basu (methinks Kirin's mom is still around somewhere)

Movies:
Guru (always been a Dhirubhai fan all my life)

Am a huge fantasy fan. Am currently reading Northern Lights (book 1, in the His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman), quite good. Next i plan to start reading Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Serious fiction can take a hike for the time being...i guess i like it here in dreamland.
